Children's Dentistry FAQs

Dreamland Dental in Bellflower welcomes infants, toddlers, and older children. Most children are comfortable and less nervous when their parent stays with them in the treatment area. This is also gives you an opportunity to gain a better understanding of your child’s dental and oral health.

We ensure that your child has a positive, comfortable and relaxed experience during their first dental checkup at our office. From experience, younger children respond best when treated with compassion, patience, and humor, preferably in the earlier parts of the day.

During routine checkups, your child will receive a professional cleaning and thorough oral exam to ensure that he/she is brushing and flossing properly and to check for any tooth decay, gum disease, and other problems. During these visits, we will continue to develop a strong relationship with your child and inculcate good dental habits that allow them to smile with confidence.

Porcelain Veneers Bellflower

Veneers may be recommended when teeth are/have discolored due to:

  • Poor oral hygiene
  • Excessive fluoride
  • Tetracycline stain
  • Root canal treated
  • Chipped/Broken
  • Uneven
  • Worn down
  • Gap

Dental Veneers Procedure

Dental veneers can be used to correct the issue. Dental veneers are tooth colored material that get bonded to teeth. First, the dentist needs to identify if the patient is a good candidate for veneers based on their occlusion and alignment. In some cases, the patient is referred to an orthodontist to evaluate the occlusion and spacing of the teeth. Second, the dentist will prepare the tooth structure by removing about .5 mm of the enamel. In some cases, the patient does not need to be anesthetized. The dentist will place temporary veneers on the patient and sends the impression of the teeth to the lab on the same appointment. The lab usually takes between 1 to 2 weeks to prepare the veneers.

The next appointment, the dentist will remove the temporary veneers and replace them with the fabricated veneers by the lab.

Some patients that grind their teeth, clench their teeth, have periodontal disease, or severe decay are not a good candidate for veneers.

Zoom is a popular in-office bleaching treatment used to lighten enamel discoloration. Before the procedure, you will have regular professional teeth cleaning to get rid of plaque and tartar.

Teeth Whitening Bellflower

The dentist will use cheek retractors and cotton rolls to protect your gums, tongue, and other soft tissues from the chemicals. A protective layer will also be painted on your gums before the whitening starts.

Once your teeth are exposed, your dentist will apply the whitening gel, and allow it to remain in place for 15 minutes. During this time, the Zoom light will be used to activate the gel so it penetrates the tooth enamel to remove the discoloration. As the treatment progresses, you can listen to music, watch TV, or just relax.

A full Zoom whitening treatment requires 3-4, 15-minute meetings, so the treatment takes a maximum of one hour. When the treatment is complete, the dentist will apply a fluoride gel to reduce tooth sensitivity.

Zoom whitening is not recommended for expectant and lactating women, as well as children under 13 years, though there are no documented effects. It is just a safety precaution because the zoom light produces some heat that may cause discomfort or sensitivity during the treatment. Any sensitivity can be easily managed using anti-sensitivity toothpaste before the procedure.

To determine whether Zoom in-office bleaching is right for you, we recommend that you schedule a comprehensive examination with our dentist to ensure that your teeth and gums are in proper health. Make an appointment at 562-867-2026

Seeing a Pediatric Dentist

Primary teeth or baby teeth are 20 teeth that start to become replaced by adult teeth at an early age of 6. Children as old as 2 years old, as soon as they develop their first lower teeth, are recommended to visit a pediatric dentist. A pediatric dentist is a dentist that has specialized in treating children. Pediatric dentists usually study two ore three more years after finishing dental school.

Your pediatric dentist at Dreamland Dental and Orthodontics will evaluate if your child needs treatment. The health of primary dentition is very important in development of adult teeth. For example, losing a primary tooth before age of 10 can cause shift in the other dentition. In these situations, the adult tooth can be blocked out inside of the bone by unwanted early movement of primary teeth. The adult tooth cannot grow naturally. Orthodontic treatment is needed to move the adult tooth to the surface of the mouth.

In addition, thumb sucking and nail biting during developmental age can create major dental and skeletal problems.

Children’s dentistry can prevent many major dental and skeletal issues.

Have you been dreaming of getting a straighter smile but don’t want to go through conventional orthodontic treatment with metal wires? Invisalign might be exactly what you need.

The Invisalign system uses an innovative approach to straighten your teeth using a series of virtually invisible, custom-made removable aligners to gradually move your teeth to the right position, instead of the fixed metal wires used with traditional braces.

How the Invisalign System Works

Depending on the severity of your teeth misalignment and the desired result, your teeth will be gently moved into place by the custom aligners over a period of 9 to 24 months. Aligners are clear plastic trays that apply gentle pressure to crooked teeth, causing them to turn or move slowly.

The aligners should be changed every two weeks during the course of the treatment. Your dental appointments are brief, and the treatment is less uncomfortable than other orthodontic solutions. Considering that Invisalign treatment is also virtually invisible, it is usually a top choice of treatment for teens, adults, and professionals looking for a straighter smile.
