Braces or Veneers: Which Comes First?

Many patients considering cosmetic dentistry ask an important question: Should I get braces first or veneers first?

The answer depends on tooth alignment, bite function, and long-term goals. At Dreamland Dental & Orthodontics, we take a conservative, step-by-step approach to ensure both health and aesthetics are protected.

When Braces Are Recommended First

Orthodontic treatment may be recommended before veneers if you have:

  • Crowded or overlapping teeth

  • Significant rotations or spacing

  • Bite problems such as overbite, underbite, or crossbite

  • Teeth that would require excessive enamel removal to look straight with veneers

Moving teeth into proper alignment first allows veneers to be placed more conservatively and last longer.

When Veneers May Be Done Without Braces

Veneers may be appropriate without orthodontics when:

  • Teeth are generally straight with only minor misalignment

  • The bite is stable and functional

  • The primary concern is tooth color, shape, or surface damage

In these cases, porcelain veneers can improve appearance without moving teeth.

A Conservative Philosophy Matters

At our office, orthodontic treatment is recommended only when necessary. If veneers are appropriate without braces, we will explain why. If braces are needed first, veneers are placed later as the final cosmetic refinement.
