You can even remember the details of the procedure<\/li>\n<li><strong>Moderate sedation<\/strong> &#8211; also referred to as conscious sedation. You\u2019re awake enough to follow simple instructions, and even speak with slurred words. But you have little recollection of the procedure when the drug wears off.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Deep sedation<\/strong> &#8211; these drugs take you to the edge of consciousness. You\u2019re not aware of what\u2019s happening, but can be awakened if needed<\/li>\n<li><strong>General anesthesia<\/strong> &#8211; you\u2019re completely knocked out or unconscious, and have no memory of the procedure.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How Are Sedative Drugs Administered?<\/h2>\n<p>Different sedatives are delivered in different ways, which in turn affects how soon they take effect and how long they stay in your system. The common types of sedation dentistry include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Oral sedatives<\/strong> &#8211; the dentist will give you some pills to swallow one hour or so before the procedure starts for minimal to moderate sedation<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nitrous oxide<\/strong> &#8211; also referred to as laughing gas, the nitrous oxide is combined with oxygen and supplied via a mask placed over your nose. It is given before and during the procedure to actively control the level of consciousness during treatment.
